Kentucky hopes to continue winning ways at Music City Bowl
By Bud L. Ellis
Kentucky isn’t known for football – the school is one of the traditional basketball powerhouses. But Rich Brooks is changing perceptions.
The Kentucky head coach has directed the Wildcats to their fourth consecutive bowl berth, the first time the program has reached a bowl game in four straight seasons. The streak started at the Music City Bowl in 2006 against Clemson, a game the Wildcats won 28-20.
That’s where the streak carries the Cats next, Kentucky accepting a bid to face the Tigers in this year’s Music City Bowl, Dec. 27 in Nashville.
For a school known with a much deeper history of making postseason waves in March, and not December, this is progress. Big progress. Kentucky’s three consecutive bowl victories is tied with such prestigious football programs as Southern Cal and Georgia, and ranks tied for seventh among longest active streaks. The Wildcats also won the 2007 Music City Bowl and the 2008 Liberty Bowl.
Kentucky enters the Music City Bowl at 7-5, the fourth year in a row the Wildcats have won at least seven games. This season has been marked with milestone victories for Kentucky, as the Wildcats beat Auburn for the first time since 1966 and won at Georgia for the first time since 1977. Kentucky closed the season strong, winning five of its final seven.
In addition to the 2006 Music City Bowl, the Wildcats and Clemson also met in the 1993 Peach Bowl, with the Tigers squeaking out a 14-13 victory.
